Chinese Music Festival Gala – Echo of the Silk and Bamboo 7pm 26th July, Holy Sepulchre Church, London
We are pleased to present this special concert with a selection of traditional and contemporary Chinese music in London’s Musicians’ church during our July 2024 London Chinese Music Festival. This unique programme features China’s distinguished master Li Pengpeng (guqin scholarly zither) and UK virtuoso Cheng Yu (pipa lute), Hu Ruijun (dizi/xiao Bamboo flutes), Yang Kang (guzheng 21-stringed zither), Zhang Jiaqi (guqin), Huang Ziyang (erhu), Jingyu Chew (Sheng-mouth organ) and Alex Arenare. The concert also presents the award-winning Silk String Quartet, Silk and Bamboo Music and London Youlan Qin Society’s performances. The programme includes:
Incantation of Pu’an 普庵咒 (Trad. Buddhist style) – Guqin zither Ensemble Drunken Ecstasy 酒狂(based on 1425 score) – Guqin Ensemble
Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon 卧虎藏龙- String Quartet with Piano (composed by Tan Dun, 2000) Spring at Mt Tianshan 天山之春 – pipa and Rawap lutes Duo
Spanish Gypsy Dance 西班牙斗牛舞曲 – Sheng (bamboo mouth-organ) solo with accompaniment (by Pascual Marquina Narro in 1923)
Initial Hart 初心 – Guzheng zither with Piano (by Dong Xin Fang b. 1 985) Red Bell, Yellow Bell 红钟,黄钟 – for 5-stringed pipa and piano composed by James Batty (b.1990) – World premiere. Creek of the Oars 欸乃- Guqin solo (Trad. 1549 score)
Csárdás" (or "Czardas") 查尔达斯 – erhu solo with piano by Vittorio Monti. Written in 1904
