Details of the scheme

Why support the scheme?

There are many reasons why you should join the Choir Supporter scheme including:

·      Maintenance of an important tradition: The English Choral Tradition has for a long time been a world-leader in church music, producing not only outstanding choirs but some of the most talented choral, ensemble and solo singers in the world. It is a musical education of outstanding breadth and quality. As the National Musicians’ Church, we want to be at the forefront of maintaining and developing this tradition, maintaining what is good from the past whilst making it relevant to future generations.

·      Education of future generations: Choral Singing is both an exceptional musical training and a discipline that enables young people to develop socially, emotionally and spiritually. Many of our local schools lack access to any musical education. We want to change that, by giving young people the experience of working with our outstanding musical department and the opportunity to learn new skills. These are skills that will enable them to choose a career in music, should they wish, or to enjoy music-making at any level for the rest of their lives.

·     The Cultural heritage of the City of London: Holy Sepulchre is the largest non-Cathedral church in the City of London. It is a flexible space with a magnificent acoustic. This makes it a perfect venue for the arts, and choral singing in particular. As the Musicians’ Church, we want to play a role in the cultural enrichment of the City by being a place of musical and artistic excellence and a hub for vibrant choral singing and music making, both sacred and secular.

Your Impact

The impact you will have by becoming a Choir Supporter, includes:

·      Supporting Excellence: The Scheme will ensure retention of a world-class choir and organist, ensuring that the National Musicians’ Church is a place of thriving choral singing for years to come.

·      Supporting Education: The Scheme will enable us to engage with local schools and educational hubs, support our choral educational programme and enrich the lives of young people through music, as well as developing a Henry Wood school of music.

·      Commissioning of New Music: The Scheme will enable us to commission new music from a wide variety of composers and to nurture young compositional talent. This will enable us to maintain a vibrant repertoire and to champion the newest ideas in choral composition.

·      Choir Recordings: The Scheme will enable our professional choir to develop their platform globally, attracting people around the world to the work and mission of the National Musicians’ Church. Recordings will promote new composers and unrecorded works by old masters.

Some of the feedback we have received

“Your service was wonderful and the choir and organist are extraordinarily talented…I was transported by their musical abilities.” Visiting Congregant

“Singing as part of the professional choir at HSL is rewarding musically and beneficial to my skills as a singer, for example, in sight reading newly composed works. It is also hugely enriching to my well-being. The team of singers is unique and of the highest standard in London (many of whom have successful solo careers alongside their choral singing) but not only that, they are such a supportive group of friends. It's an atmosphere unlike any other church job I have in London and long may it continue.”  Gavin Cranmer-Moralee, Bass

"I was a regular soprano at HSL for 8 years during a very formative part of my singing training. The high standard of the other singers inspired me to develop my consort singing skills and Peter's supportive musical direction helped build my confidence both as an ensemble and solo singer. Having a weekly opportunity to tackle a wonderful variety of repertoire in such a beautiful building was a privilege and a key part in my development as a performer." Hilary Cronin, Soprano

“The restoration of traditional Choral Evensong at Holy Sepulchre, The National Musicians’ Church, could not be more appropriate. The setting is intimate but the musical quality is on a par with that of London’s Cathedrals and the Abbey. Eight young professional singers, an organist and a director: Wednesdays at 5.15pm for 45 minutes, followed by liquid refreshment!” Rogers Covey-Crump, tenor and member of The Hilliard Ensemble.
